As a short-term strategy, it is important to maintain funding support from donors. However, it should be understood that fundraising using such approach is yet to be able to guarantee the continuity of funding for independent monitors.

Policy BriefSustainable Funding to Address Effective Monitoring NeedsIn 13 years of implementation, TLAS is still progressing to improve its implementation. Implementation of transparency and independent monitors’ access to data should constantly be improved, while follow-up efforts should be immediately formulated to guarantee full participation and access to sustainable funding to support independent monitors’ role.

Success storyFAO-EU FLEGT PROGRAMMEThe FAO-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Programme has supported a number of Indonesian civil society organizations (CSOs) to train and mentor 550 new independent forest monitors across Indonesia since 2017. Expanding the scope and reach of independent forest monitoring contributes to the robustness and credibility of the national timber legality assurance system and is critical in protecting Indonesia’s forests.
