Forestfund, 15 March 2021. Timber legality is an important requirement of good forest governance. As control and surveillance are inseparable parts of timber distribution, these functions are expected to work well through Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS).
Consistent surveillance and control in implementing TLAS policy are necessary given the high industrial demand for timber for meeting both domestic demand and export. Therefore, government and civil society should take action to ensure the legality of the distributed timber.
As part of civil society who cares about environmental sustainability, Deling Kuning monitors timber distribution in East Java, given that the province has a port frequently used for handling logs from Kalimantan and Papua.
This monitoring followed up the training and workshop event that had been held. Engaging more female activists, the monitoring found a timber laundering mode that uses containers from illegal logging.
Regarding the findings of the 10-day investigation, Deling Kuning has presented its monitoring output to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and East Java Provincial Forestry Office, expecting that the office could enforce the law, particularly in applying timber administration based on applicable laws and regulations.
