Independent Monitoring Consolidation Workshop, 21-22 November 2018

The consolidation was held for two days, the first day as an introduction to the independent monitoring consolidation meeting (PI) bringing presenters from various stakeholders, including; KLHK, Certification Institutions, Donor Institutions, and CSOs. In the first session, it was explained about the development of the two-year FLEGT license, the challenge of the credibility of the assessment process from the side of the Certification Body, supply chain certainty and international market needs for legal and sustainable timber, as well as funding opportunities for PIs. The second session of the presentation was filled by the PI (CSO) who highlighted various SVLK perspectives, ranging from the development of PIs, the gap of illegal timber through conversion, and strengthening SVLK rules.

The participants consisted of, the Government (KLHK), Certification Institutions, Associations (APHI, ISWA), and representative PI organizations from the island of Sumatra (PBHI, HAKI, Walhi Lampung)), Java (LSPP, PPLH Mangkubumi), Kalimantan (Kaharingan Institute, GRID), Sulawesi (Celebes Journal), Papua (Papua Forest Watch), and National (ICEL, Auriga, Pusaka, FWI, Kaoem Telapak, LEI).

In the afternoon, the meeting continued with PI consolidation. The two strategic plans that are the topic of discussion are joint monitoring plans between PIs, and preparation of position papers relating to the two years of implementing the FLEGT license. Regarding the joint monitoring plan, strategic plans for each PI organization have been made during 2018-2019 which will be classified so that they do not become overlapping between organizations and make monitoring activities effective. Some of the activities that emerged were monitoring, increasing PI capacity, and advocacy.

Whereas related paper positions aim to respond to two years of FLEGT licenses in force and provide input to both the Indonesian - European Union governments, certification bodies, and other stakeholders. The input that is trying to address is:

Furthermore, the position paper will be formulated more deeply by a small team that will be distributed throughout the participants for their input on November 28 2018. The advocacy process will be determined after the completion of the final position paper.
